Olgantha: Phio, Goddess of Knowledge and Civilization by PB
Holy symbol of Phio, goddess of Knowledge and Civilization
Phio:
The mysterious goddess Phio has existed for eons, spawning from the last of the ancient civilization to the far South, forgotten in name, but yet this goddess, believed to be derived in name from their language, still exists. It is said that a woman carrying a book with the symbol emblazoned on the covered traveled from the far South and taught the people as she went. Whenever they offered food and water she gave thanks but declined it, instead telling them to remember her name and to build places of learning so that others may discover the joy of worldly understanding, to feel connected with the world, since indeed all people are. Always the next day she left them without a trace save a book with that symbol on it and a medallion of the same make, practically creating scholars overnight. Once it is said a group of men heard of this woman’s passing and sought to put her in her place for speaking blasphemy by ravaging her body and mind, but upon touching her skin and looking in her eyes as they pulled her to the ground, they found their minds broken, trapped in some primeval state of absolute terror or perhaps a memory thought locked away forever. As the goddess of knowledge she knows all things, and if you are foolish enough to cross her, she will comb your mind for whatever will destroy you most completely and utterly.
Phio's Librarians are intensely focused on their work and don't have time to invest in paltry distractions like biological imperatives and so are asexual through discipline. In theory, at least.
Her commandments are few but specific:
Go out in the world and teach the ignorant, and build libraries and schools not churches in my name, and seek out lore of realms long passed. Knowledge is for all.
Use your knowledge to give you and your allies an edge whenever possible, building strategies and formations as you would formulas and equations.
Bring harmony to your emotions so that they may not dictate over logic, reason and understanding.
There is only one truly destructive tendency that Phio’s philosophy can lead to if taken to an extreme, and that is gluttony--not of food, but of magic. Seekers of lost lore can easily lose their way in the quest for ultimate power, seeking out that stronger spell to make their foes quaver in the depths of their soul. This can be a noble goal, but power for the sake of power leads to nothing but heartache, and more often than not, carelessness. Crumbling dungeons are littered with the corpses of those whose quest for accumulation led to their gory demise.
Scholars have written of the connections between the goddess Phio and the orc priesthood’s respect and reverence of “The Shrouded Lady”, a mysterious figure that can destroy your mind with a look.
