Holy symbol of Kali, goddess of Fury and Vengeance
Kali:
Kali, "the black one clad in sky", is a demon-hunting, serpent-swallowing, many-armed goddess of vengeance and fury. Art of this goddess varies greatly, but the most popular image of her is the creature with the body of a snake, torso of a red and blue-skinned woman, at least four arms all bristling with weaponry with long, beautifully decorated jet-black hair streaming down her lithe back dappled with starlight, flames dancing in her eyes and prominent tusks jutting from her mouth. Make no mistake: she’s a god of passions. She is almost as frequently hailed by lovers as warriors and in tales she was the candle that burns twice as bright. In many ways she is not only a goddess to be feared for her uncompromising intensity, but also a cautionary tale of a being, even a god, who can lose her way in a moment of careless ferocity.
Kali is a goddess of rage, fire and war, but also maternity and motherhood. Her adherents profess strict gynosexuality, for a woman's body is a temple to be praised and bowed down before. Societies where Kali is prayed to most fervently are always matriarchal with most women of authority taking men and women into their harem, their yoni, the most talented Shakti often shared between other Matrika or used as barter, being described as physical embodiments of the Matrika's inner shakti. Those Shakti that refuse to leave their Matrika's yoni are punished, either left abandoned and stripped of clothes and belongings or killed either through strangulation or mutilation. Kali herself is said to have 108 Shakti among her yoni; they are called dakini or "sky dancers" and they are said appear at the funerals of Kali's followers to deliver their shakti to be devoured by Kali and returned to the endless cycle of time as their body is devoured by the earth.
Her tenets are as follows:
Hunt the demons living in this world and show the abominations no quarter.
Like the burning flame, light a way in the darkness for those in need, but only if they are not afraid of getting singed; do not tarry for weaklings.
Show passion in all things: love, life and war. Let it rage and keep it stoked; never let it smolder.
As one might expect from a goddess of such intensity, the path of wrath is a very real threat, and more than one battlepriest has allowed her ferocity take hold of her better judgment, leading to pointless death and destruction in the heat of the moment. Followers of Kali (sometimes referred to as “the Becoiled”) always seek to stoke their personal fires, but true Burnished Ones know how to temper their flames without using Kali as an excuse for their bloodlust.
The orcs call Kali “Snake Mother and Fire Sister” while elite, gnoll shocktroopers make war as “Fangs of Kali”. The bloodlust is a natural fit for them, while curiously goblins shy away from her.
The remains of a gaseous planet with its atmosphere burned away, leaving only the molten, metallic core (sometimes called a chthonian planet) beyond Verden is called Kali and is thought to be the site of some cataclysm, leading many to look to its auspices after the Day of Radiance. It has a close proximal orbit to the gas giant Shani, being far "above" Shani when its orbit goes diagonally below Kali and just "below" Shani later in its elliptical in what is referred to as "The Autumn Waltz", a quindecennial event (every fifteen years) on the autumnal equinox.
