A little back-story for this:
The "griffin apocalypse" resulted in not only most of the world's population disappearing, but the survivors becoming griffins. The U.S. was one of the first nations to recover (very few leaders or elected officials survived, so everyone was starting over) and one of the first orders to the military was to "recover" any military assets that might get misused or become hazards -- particularly nuclear weapons.
Here we see two generals arguing about the plans.
(Yes, I'm the one who made the commission. Roz is a great one for griffins.)

Hire a writer? I'd write the stuff myself!
The "griffin apocalypse" has several possible story threads (such as grand epic and various personal lives threading through that, with room to become a shared setting), but is also a part of the greater "Griffin the Circumstances" theme of people-griffins, which means there are even more possible (if different) settings.
