This year for Valentines Day I wrote a poem for a friend who's near and dear to me. We both have a our modest streaks and we share a nasty habit of putting ourselves down more often than we should. I wrote this as a reminder of how much her personality inspires everyone around her and that she can get through whatever life throws her way.

Woah, finally I see a decent valentine's poem. (At least I think it's decent) Most are just "I love you, I love you, I love you" and/or "you're beautiful like [insert cliche here]." They all seem so superficial, but this one seems more genuine. Flowers are an overused symbol in these types of poems, but you managed to still make it entertaining. You must really love your friend, and I'm tempted to favorite this one.
I see you DID favorite it though, thank you so much it means a lot~
Its true a lot of writers stick to rhymes and similes for their poems, and I try my best to distinguish myself from the rest as best I can. I wanted to stick with an old-fashioned symbol since this was a valentines poem, but I tried my darndest to give it a personal touch, since that usually adds so much more depth to things like this.
Nothing's quite as inspiring as the people that mean the most to you.

As someone who utterly despises Valentine's Day, and all the horrid and crass commercialism that it's come to represent (as well as how it really IS a slap in the face to every single person), I nevertheless quite appreciated the quiet beauty of this piece.
And yes, your Dickinson vibe was very strong in this. :)

Your comments really mean a lot to me, ya know! Whenever I submit a poem these days it seems your coments always carry the most weight, critically or no :P
Admittedly, I did default to purchasing some roses and what-not, but I really try to put an offbeat spin on to any holiday celebrations I do (i.e., why get a hallmark card when I can write something more meaningful?).
