These little ghosts are the spirits of the deceased as they appear in the real world. They may take the same form they had in life inside the dream world, but they're limited to this appearance in the real world. They can't be seen by everyone but they can possess the living. Doing so forces the person to micro sleep and have visions of the dream world while awake.
