Well, The Ducky just can't get enough of the Bashakill Wildlife Preserve that is located in Upstate New York. This was The Ducky's second week there, and all ready I can see the changes! Not only is there more vegetation, but there were plenty more birds to see as well!! When the Ducky first got there, there were many tree swallows skimming the water, gosbeaks were hanging around on the tree behind the volunteers and me, baltimore orieles were playing in the woods, and I even got to see the female redwinged blackbirds!!
OH and The Nesting Eagles came a wee closer to the boat launch!!

Very nice. The grosbeaks have definitely invaded. The rose-breasted ones are all over the place suddenly and they're so beautiful. I'm glad you had a good time in the Bashakill again.
Sorry I didn't make it down today. The fog was totally nasty. And this was the first day I was actually scheduled to be there.

Yeah, and they were so quick that I couldn't get a good picture of them! They all turned out to be blurs.
Aww, tis ok--actually when I arrrived at the boat launch it was only cloudy, but on Route 17W right by Exit 114 it was very foggy indeed-but that was the only fog patch I hit. It was clear on the marsh, just drizzly. I spent all morning with Patricia, Nina (spelling?), and I met John and Lynn.
Thanks for the recommendation of Danny's!! That place is so awesome!! It's a nice place to stop after a hike in the marsh!!
The Bashakill is in me blood now, and I just can't seem to leave it! Patricia gave me the brochure, and for $10, the Ducky can join the Bashakill Assocation!! Cool stuff!! I plan on going up there every other Saturday, until late June, so the nextime ya will see the Ducky is on Saturday, May 17

It's one of those places where people come back again and again. There's always so much going on no matter what time of year. And if you come back on the 17th it'll be in the peak migration time. In fact John Haas is having his peak migration birding outing that day starting at 8:30AM. Were you coming for that?
I haven't managed to get any photos of the grosbeaks yet either but did get some good shots of a white crowned sparrow. They're such cute little things. There was an osprey flying around up here too. I was out by the lake with a neighbor and tried pointing it out but he's not much of a wildlife person.

Yuppers!! I plan on coming back on May 17 and May 24, and I can't tell ya how much I love the Bashakill--it's in me blood! When I am there, I really feel at peace, it's truly spectacular. And what makes it so nice is that it's quiet and that's the perfect environment for birding. Sometimes in November in Cape May City when the Cape May Pointe has their annual hawk watch, there are so many people there making so much noise that the birds are scared off!!
Wow! Peak migration eh? That's excellent!! Already I can't wait until the 17th!!!Tee hee, I would love to hear John Haas speak about birding. 8:30 in the morning--I will try to make it--of course I will have to leave Burlington about 5:30 though :O_o: That would be so cool though!!! I am really looking foward to his outing!! Do ya need to pre-register?
Aww, I really loved your piccies of the Osprey and the White Crowned Sparrow--they are such cute little things indeed!! Wow!! There is a lake by your house too!! Boy!! I really love New York State! As soon as me next door neighbor is off from work on a Saturday, he wants to come up with me at the Bashakill--he loves birding and wants to discuss birding with some of the volunteers. It's so nice to discuss birding with other birders--I really learn a lot :D Patricia is very knowledgeable!

I knew it would be a very early start for you. Don't expect me to be there at 8:30 either. =^.^=

Join Basha Kill birder extraordinaire, John Haas, on Saturday, May 17th at 8:30 am. Special note - meet at the Stop Sign parking lot. This is the lot that you access from Haven Road by turning north off of Haven and then following a gravel road into the lot. Call John at 845-888-0240 for details.
In case you don't know what parking lot that is, it's the one on the little dirt road you pass on your left on Haven Road. There's a gate with a stop sign on it at the far end.
Of course there's a lake nearby. Up here they're practically everywhere.

You not an early riser on Saturdays either, eh? ^.^
Hmmm, little dirt road ya pass on your left--is it before ya get to the bridge, or after? Haven Road ain't that long, so I'm sure I will find it :D
Thank YOU for the information and number. The Ducky really appreciates that! See ya on the 17th!!

On Saturdays? Definitely not. =^.^=
It's after the bridge. The area before the bridge (coming from 209) is the Haven Road parking area. There are lots of little trails in there but that's not where you're headed. The little road you're looking for is a continuation of the rail-trail and there's lots of parking in there before the gate with the stop sign. I guarantee you won't miss it.

OKIE DOKIE, Thanks for the information!! Wow!! Now, at least the Ducky knows of some more trail areas. I did see the one parking area immediately to your left coming off of Route 209, which did contain lots of little trails, and instead of going down Haven Road to go to Dannys (ducky loves that place!!!) I went down South Road to Wurtzboro. It appears there are some more little parking areas along South Road heading towards town. I will have to check them out as well.
Yuppers!! On Saturdays, the Ducky loves to sleep as well :D
