Wow! Here's a blast from the past; I didn't realize I still had this in my files. Many years ago, the only artists doing illustrations of Tolkien's epic LORD OF THE RINGS were the Hildegrandt Brothers, and I absolutely loved their works. But the one interpretation I thought they were wildly off-base on was that of the balrog that fought the Fellowship in the Mines of Moria. So I decided to draw that scene myself and illustrate the balrog according to the way Tolkien described him. (Happily, the movie got him right as well.) It's an old piece, and it's got a few problems (stiff figures and the like), but I'm still rather fond of it.

I'd have to go back and reread the SILMARILLION (which is no hardship at all), but I can't recall a specific description of Sauron, other than as the great red eye. It may be that Tolkien had gone to lengths to describe his evil, but was general in actual physical description, allowing the reader to fill in the details. Which may explain why artists always make him look different.
