Gavin Rosedale comes from an upper-class, refined family that has long held the attitude that battling and fighting are lowbrow activities beneath their prestigious tastes. Gavin, always the family's rebel and problem child, held a different view. From an early age he would practice his attacks and techniques in secret, always scolded when caught but never caring. Viewing his family as effete and stuck-up snobs, he seemed to relish any opportunity to irritate them.

When the time came to enroll him in a school of higher education his parents adamantly refused to give in to his requests to attend a battle academy. But they relented once he made it clear that no matter which school they sent him to, he would be getting into fights, and the matter of whether he sullied their good name or was graded for his efforts was up to them. Under heavy protest from his family Gavin was enrolled in the prestidious Poke-Combat Academy of Higher Learning.

Gavin did quite well in battles as a freshman, forming a team known as Team Jade with some other classmates. Though the team did quite well, they were plagued with internal strife since day one, and dissolved midway through the previous year. Since then Gavin has drifted along as an independent, occasionally entertaining offers from 'mon looking to form their own team. When he was approached by friend and classmate Dominic Ardillo del Relampago about joining Team Krimson as a replacement for Zachary, who had recently left the team for "personal reaons", Gavin accepted, feeling confident that their group dynamic and attitude wouldn't lead to the same fate as his prior team.

Gavin is all manner of contradictions. On the one hand he has the culture, manners, and charm of his old-world family, but on the other hand he has the spirit and attitude of a drunken barroom brawler. Although he hates his species' reputation as "girly-'mon" and will not hesitate to throw a punch at anyone who suggests such, he has no qualms about playing such a role to the hilt for the sake of attention from the fairer sex. In a battle Gavin is a very tenacious fighter who can take a lot more punishment than anyone would suspect. He combines his defenses with a combination of disruptive effects and some rather nasty surprise attacks. Those who underestimate him quickly end up on the business end of thorns and venom.
