This is the Messerschmitt Bf 109 C-1 that then Leutnant Wolfgang Wagner flew as part of the Condor Legion (J/88) during the Spanish Civil War. Below is Wolfgang's bio throughout his "career" as a pilot.

Background: Wolfgang was a fighter ace during the first world war, scoring 15 kills against the allied forces within his first two months of service. During the Spanish Civil War, he fought along side the Nationalist side in the war as a pilot in the J88 Condor Legion and earned a Spanish Cross by mid 1938. A month after the start of WWII, Wolfgang caught an SS officer raping a woman in Belgium, in a fit of rage and disgust, he killed the officer and hid the body, the woman, Mikaela Sabre thanked him and the two fell in love, a year later they where wed. Mikaela has since produced their first child, whom the couple named Kristof Lutz Wagner. Ever since he killed the offending SS officer, Wolfgang has had to watch out, if word of this got out, he would be executed on sight, as would his family. He is not sure of things anymore and is thinking of defecting to the Americans or the British.
