Originally yeah, however these days there are fashioned chopsticks (Called Hair sticks IIRC, simply, sweet) people can wear in their hair.
I don't think Raptor was going for ye'olden days, and it was a nice design that looked beautiful, with modern influences. Not to mention, Raptor never specified they were chopsticks to begin with.

Hair sticks would be perfectly fine- If the character was not called a "Tea maid" and was not wearing kimono-like garments. You are right, this was meant to be a stereotypical reference of a Geisha or Oiran- And that is all good and fine in my opinion, if the proper clothing is worn and respected.
However, Chopsticks in the hair is a stereotype that all Asian girls (Me included) have to put up with at some point in their lives. When I got to play a wife in "the king and I" in school, they put everyone else in yellow face makeup while leaving my face plain and just sticking some chopsticks in my hair. This, along with all of the other stereotypes that Asian people are subjected to in this day and age are just annoying and unnecessary. It is the same kind of racist ignorance that goes back to WWII. So why should it continue into 2014? Speaking of which, Happy Chinese New Year.
Now I do agree that the design is lovely, however there is no need for racial stereotypes to be portrayed especially by such a bright and talented artist. A 12 year old, I practically expect this from but not someone that I look up to as an artist. It's an offensive stereotype with roots about Geesha girls or any Asian girls being easy and retarded with sideways vaginas. I just wish that this would stop happening. It is as offensive as someone designed a character that looked African American and made a point to show them eating watermelon.

I could have her change it to something else, name wise? Though the damage has already been done, I suppose. I'm sorry you've had to put up with that, and stereotypes/racism is never a fun issue. (... Also the fact they painted everyone's faces yellow is drop dead deplorable. These days you don't paint people's faces black, as that is painfully racist, now why would you paint their faces yellow ((Collective 'you', not you you, sorry.)))
I know Raptor did not do this with thoughts of being offensive, nor did she (Or I for that matter), know that chopsticks in the hair was an offensive thing (Or that Tea Maid alluded to being a geisha? she thought the idea of a little server girl would be cute). We've both seen many pictures of Eastern Asian women, and others with hairsticks in their hair, and it looked like a stylish and pretty way to keep the hair up. As for the cloths, it's obviously pulled from Eastern inspiration (specifically, Handmaid from Homestuck), but again, Raptor had no idea it'd hurt someone.
A 20+ year old can make the mistake just as easily as a 12 year old. I hate to say ignorance is an excuse, but when you do not know something is bad, how can you refrain from doing it? I can't tell you Raptor will take this down, as she has stated she's currently without a job and is hurting for money, but in the event she ever does anything Asian oriented again, I could come to you first maybe for some more accurate information, or just tell her to keep away from it all together?

Thank you so much for understanding, I really appreciate it. There is no need to change this or take it down at all. I just hope that I see this kind of thing less and was actually really disappointed to see it here... I am sure Raptor had no intention of being offensive at all and simply did not know of the connotation which isn't unusual- I am sure a lot of people don't realize things like this. (I wonder if that ties in with the whole "model Minority" thing).
If awareness can be raised then I just appreciate that attention was given and also that it is okay to discuss this... Thank you for not yelling at me or anything!
In my opinion, the clothing looks very Asian-inspired, the collar and skirt being very similar to a Chinese Cheongsam (called Qipao in Mainland) and the sleeves and belt/ribbon looking like a Japanese Kimono and Obi. The handmaid from home stuck actually wears a Chinese Cheongsam in every instance that I have seen her. Totally unrelated but Andrew Hussie has actually been accused numerous times of being a racist because of several racist stereotypes that he has portrayed in his comic - Most of which have to do with Damara.
That was very unfortunate to hear about the financial situation.. I really do hope Raptor is doing better.
Please do continue to draw Asian inspired adoptables! A lot of people like them and they catch the eye and I love seeing old time fashion being put to good contemporary aesthetic.
However, when it comes to this (Or any culture for that matter) maybe do a little bit of research about the cultural wear, look at pictures of Kimonos or Cheongsam or Hanbok or Ao Dai, etc.... Not Costume quality of course, but the real thing. Oiran and Hanfu are both good terms to look up because the outfits are super flashy and have all the whistles and bells. And by all means, it is awesome to take a modern fashionable twist as far as aesthetic goes, even if that just means simplifying.
If it were me, I would just avoid stereotypes. Raptor was not aware that the chopstick hair sticks are a negative stereotype, unfortunately, there are many similar circumstances that aren't well known... If one doesn't know any better there can't really be any real blame. I am sure she drew it without the intention of offending anyone and that is what counts but it would mean a lot to me if this particular thing could be avoided in the future.
As a side note, Kanzashi is a totally legitimate and non-offensive substitute for hairsticks to go with this kind of outfit!
