Models work great in that aspect.. i don't know if you know or not, but you can go to an arts store and get thes model things in wich you can shape them into whatever pose you want and use it as a referance. it doen't completely help, but if you apply the concept of the model and trace it down on the paper, it helps in the snece of giving you a "skeleton" to work with. it takes alot of practice but once you're able to draw modelson paper, anatomy just gets easier.
here's a slightly relative example of what i mean: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....yFlowerneg.jpg
if you look at the picture and grasp the concept of modeling, you'll see that the head, arms, and legs can be borken down into ovals and circles. the only part of the model body that can't be be broken down into ovals is the body itself. i'd say that the most relative shapes i can think of to put in the body would be a pentigon (a bit stretched out ofcourse so that the anatomy fits) for the chest and shoulders, a circle for the torso and a well rounded triangle for the pelvice area. it all might seem cplicated, and not every art style fits alot of people the same way, but if you take in enough of it and combine it with other art styles, you can pritty much do anything ^ ^
sorry i'm rambeling now, but i hoped this helps a bit!
