In some schools of Okinawan kobujutsu a seiryuto (which resembles a dao or machete) is used in conjunction with the tinpei (a rattan shield, but some schools use a large sea turtle shell in conjunction with a hand-spear, the rochin), much like the dao and shield forms in kung fu.
