What you see in the picture is my footprints leading out to a bit of a sandy beach. I realized what I was getting myself into, was dressed for it and had backup in case anything were to go wrong. But what lies here is quicksand. How does quicksand happen in this instance, two points of water, 1 secluded stream trying to merge into the river. It does to the left, but further left is where the stream is located up a steep incline that joins the sandy beach. Water trying to flow naturally has to pass through a bank of sand in order to continue, and not to simply puddle where it sits. This creates a liquid sand effect which anything heavy and slightly shifting that were to disturb its surface, the surface liquifies and down you sink into the cool wet sand. This particular bit o' quick was only about a foot deep or so, but it was a pretty good example for this bit of Muducation. Since its been cold out and less than pretty lately I was outfit in some simple hikers, a gore-tex boot-sock liners to keep my feet from absolutely freezing.

Unfortunately this stuff is pretty out in the open, and regularly visited by pet owners and people in general. The rest of the beach is a mix of sand, and rocks, with only two sections where quicksand regularly shows up, and those places are generally avoided by people, as they quickly learn why not to traverse the wet sands.
Yeah, I never play in the winter. Quicksand is already dangerous enough in the summer, when hypothermia isn't a danger. At least in the summer, I can afford to spend an hour digging my feet out. And since I never wear anything other than dive boots in untested areas, I don't have much to pull free.
I depth gauged this stuff before hand and found it to be no greater than around a foot of so in depth. And I came prepared with a long goretex over the knee sock type of thing. Its an old boot liner that I put on under boots or shoes that I wear during winter hikes. keeps my feetsies warm and dry. More exploration will come this summer though for fun. This is a great place to bring friends for swimming in the river as about this bend is calm and super slow.
Ahh, summer!
Ahh, summer!
