Survival: Mother and Child
Survival comes in many forms, whether they be obtaining food, the reproductive and survival rates of the individuals and future generations, and how individuals protect themselves from the harsh environment.
African art I find interesting because of the bold use of colors and shapes, which could be found in their painting, ceramics, and textiles. Even in their patterns there are pleasant irregularities to it. The textiles are traditionally made from the efforts of both genders, the women gather the materials and spin the thread, the men then does the weaving. The very nature that both genders play a part in making the fabric also have some reproductive symbology, both complementing each other to create a whole. The art of textiles nowadays preserved much of the history of textile making, however, new innovations, designs, and fashions are bringing the African textiles into modern day society.
*Note: I wish I have the artists name, but it is untitled, but you can Google African Art to find the picture it was based on.

I thought it looked alright when when I did the sketch, maybe a little off, but I thought it looked alright. But as soon as I added the color.... Oops too late did I realize the proportions are off and the head and torso is too big to believably think the rest of his body is curled up here. Sigh, this is why we do the mirror trick or have someone else look at the picture to make the changes before I ink and render it.

The mirror trick is when you flip the image horizontally either by mirror, software, or looking at the line work from behind your picture :) seeing the picture in a slightly different way helps break the brain out of the "oh it looks alright" thinking and the mistakes usually become more apparent when you do so :)
In his defense, he probably didn't do much sketches and studies of anatomical proportions of babies, and the baby Jesus looks like he has a proportions of a miniature person rather than a toddler.
Or maybe it was a style of the time to make the baby more "regal" and "holy" rather than an ordinary toddler *shrugs*
And cool, you're an art history nerd =D
