Polson Logging Co. #70 Baldwin, 2-8-2, 1922. Oil fired, saturated steam.
A classic Baldwin face for a slightly less classic loco. The Polson Brothers of Hoquiam, WA ordered this loco as a nearly exact copy of a locomotive that ran on a neighboring line. That loco was already 10 to 12 years old at the time, and was itself, legend has it, based on a design from 10 or 12 years prior.
The end result it a locomotive that is already one or two dozen years old before it ever left the factory in Philadelphia, PA.
This 1922 Victorian currently pulls trains over rivers and around and over forested hills at Mount Rainier Scenic RR in Elbe, WA. The mechanics at MRSR finished a frame-up restoration of this magnificent beast in 2010 and had a loco that was better than new.

Why yes. Yes I did. They've revised their route. Instead of turning at Mineral lake, they've built a passing track at the shops and run the loco around the train at the shops while the passengers get to have a quick tour of the shop facilities, storage shed and (under construction) museum at their yard east of Mineral. Far more interesting that way.
