Kaynus v2 Body Evolution - Duct Tape to Fur
Since I've been taking progress shots all throughout this suit build I decided to put together another series that shows the making of the bodysuit. I started off lifting my pattern straight off of my duct tape dummy (DTD), but the DTD pattern was WAY too tight when I first tested it.
The solution? Make a hybrid pattern between the McCall's pattern that I used for my previous Kaynus suit and what I got off of the DTD. The result still needed a little tailoring once it was assembled, but the fit is definitely better than my last suit by a long shot. Next time, though, I think I will figure something out that does not involve raglan sleeves--it would be nice not to have tents for arms, lol.
Also, tracing your final patterns onto poster board and then using that to go to tracing on fur? Fantastic. That worked incredibly well, and I ended up with left and right pieces that were just shy of exact mirror images. What I will do differently next time is make sure I don't bump said poster board patterns while tracing, ha ha ha. Ah well, the differences were still very slight despite that happening, and this ended up being a very easy suit to sew. :)

Kind of a combination of both. My initial idea was to wrap the DTD in plastic wrap and then do another layer of duct tape over it to use for making a pattern, and I cut the pieces based off of the commercial jumpsuit pattern that I used in my first bodysuit. That ended up being a REALLY tight fit--I could barely get in the test suit, and movement was almost impossible.
That's when I decided to get out the commercial pattern, trace each piece onto some fresh test fabric, and then lay the test suit pieces (that were too tight) on top of those tracings. Some parts (such as the base of the arms and shoulders, the seat, and the neck) were taken exactly from the commercial pattern. Where my DTD pattern pieces came in was mostly in slimming down the arms, torso, and legs so that it wasn't so baggy. Next time I do this I will also bring in the arm pits some so they aren't so baggy, but for this suit it works. :)

I like how thorough this process is, and a lot more refined than the gen-1 suit. Crazy but cool concept to do the duct tape dummy (I'm thinking that's one Duct-tape myth we won't see on Mythbusters) - makes sense though. Did you just have someone duct-tape over you first to create it?
Heh, yeah, the duct tape dummy is a practice that has been around for quite a while in fursuit building...I've just never taken advantage of it before. Sark was actually the one that helped me make the DTD back when he was visiting for Furry Weekend Atlanta last year. It's a silly and slightly awkward process, but I can't argue that the end product is useful. :P
