his name is ghost, and he's a strange creature from the "void," a place where only the consciousness exists, floating through darkness

most of the consciousnesses in the void are insane or entirely otherworldly from time spent there, just existing in their own thoughts, and it's highly advised to never remove them from the void

but one being, a demonic sort of creature that had been in the void since the dawn of time, was taken out and given physical form

the form was that of a glowing white wolf with blue eyes, adorned with sharp spines that were remnants of the void, and a black sash to keep him grounded in the physical world

his name was terminus

but that's all been lost in the annals of time, now; those who knew of it have been dead for ages, and he can't tell them

at some point between his first steps into the mortal world and the present, he was taken and repurposed to ferry the dead to their final destinations

his mouth was sewn shut into a permanent smile, and his eyes were made into shining beacons to help the dead find their way

is he happy with this? no one knows, no one can tell

in different cultures he is called different things, but the most common name is "ghost"

he appears in a being's vision when they are near death; this causes them to blame him for their death and fear him

in reality, he doesn't pick who he sees; he only goes to those who will soon need his services, as a warning, to give them time to say goodbye

when death comes, ghost guides the soul to its final destination - whatever it believes, whatever it is tied to

this can range from reincarnation to heaven to an eternity in the void

because there are always beings near death all over the world, ghost splits into millions of spectral forms and is, theoretically, everywhere at once

his true form's location is unknown, and most mortals wouldn't know the difference

locked in his past are the keys to his freedom, if it is so desired; there are also dark secrets and the knowledge of a great power that will destroy everything when it arises, but he cannot speak of this, as he cannot speak of anything

maybe someday the right being will come along and free his tongue

or maybe they won't, and he will witness the destruction of existence

until then he will stay bound to his duty and guide the dead to their afterlives
