Spring, or Indian grave?
Chalybeate Spring is what Brandywine Springs park was named for. Native Americans believed the water from this spring had healing properties, passing on these beliefs to early settlers. In fact, long before the amusement park was built settlers would travel for days just to drink the rusty looking, horrible tasting, foul smelling water. In 1826 the hotel(long gone) was built up the hill from here, and in the late 1890's an amusement park was built around the spring. People may have gotten better, but more likely from the clean air and exercise from walking down to the spring every day.
It was believed in order for the water to work it must never be brought to the hotel or removed from the vicinity of the sring. Long after the amusement park closed a local legend arose that the short wrought iron railing was site of an Indian grave, a legend I was told when I was younger.
Until recently only half the railing seen here was above ground and the spring covered with about a foot and a half of dirt. There has been a lot of restoration going on here recently. Hopefully thats whats happening here.
