I can relate to this story. I've always liked animals, cartoon and anthro characters, plush, mascots, and so on. I only found out there was a fandom in 2002 and then joined in shortly after that.

My first in-person experience with the fandom was one day at Anthrocon 2000.
What I saw was.......people like me! It was wonderful.

I still often wonder what spooked him out.
