Just about the only thing nature provides that we have to much of and don't need especially is people. But I can't see it being socially acceptable to burn surplus humanity. For one thing there's the smell. For another, everyone would argu whether we're burning too many Middle-Easterner and not enough Whites, or more Indians than Chinese. And black people would suspect way too many of them are going into the generators than everyone else, no matter what the number show. We all want to be the only ethnic group left standing when the end of the world finally comes...
That reminds me of the Druuge from Star Control 2, whose special move was to throw a crew member into the furnace to refill energy. Or as a form of execution when the company that owns the entire planet, and all air/water/food/etc on it, fired an employee who is then "stealing" said air and sentenced to death... ^_^
There were also the "screws" from Vaughan Bode's Sunpot. They were small robots without arms or legs, and were helpless to resist when shoveled into the furnaces. Why the Sunpot ran on burning robots, I don't know... I guess it was just Bode's comment on the justice of things in general. Why call them screws? Well, they were certainly screwed...
This comment reminds me of A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift.
