Helmets negate identity, especially on things like TES or Metro, where factions have uniforms to deal with. It's more fluff-sane to just have people lacking a helmet than having, say, a unique one for themselves. It's a comon trope, yes, but being more realisit and putting all your major characters behind a mask means they're less relatable.
