Rotoscoping is specifically used when modifying original footage to replace a character with another. For example, if you've ever watched 'Kung Pow: Enter the Fist' that is the perfect example of rotoscoping. The producers of the movie removed the original character and inserted their own into the film.

Rotoscope was a technique many animators from the golden years used to create believable and fluid animation, Disney used it in a lot of movies like Snow White, Sleeping Beautie and Cinderella, this was most evident specially at dancing scenes.

In these days of CG animation, rotoscoping has been replaced by motion capture, but many of the old movies remain unsurpassed in terms of great and fluid 2d animation thanks to rotoscope.
