He has always been like that. After all, if he was able to crack jokes soon after Sandleford's destruction*, then he can jest in (literally) any situation. ;)

*Admittedly, he did this in orded to keep Holly from losing his will to live.

Glad to see Bluebell in this :). He was my favorite from the book, but they left him out of the movie and TV adaptations.
