And THIS is why I've been so busy! This gorgeous boy is completely hand made by me, and is the first of two big pieces for my final year of university.
He was sculpted in clay, moulded in fibreglass and cast in silicone. The bulk of the fur is actually DF, but the area around his nose, eyes, muzzle and chin is completely hand punched using a mix of faux fur and real hair for that realistic bristled texture! The mane is NFT, it was orange haha, but a lot of airbrushing later and voila!!
He's not wearable, he's a prop :)

I used a home made hair punching tool, they are so easy to make! Just get yourself a scalpel blade handle (the kind that has a screw to tighten the hold on the blade) and rather than putting a scalpel head in there, pop the needle in, point first. Then using pliers just snip the eye to make a two pronged fork, perfect for pushing hairs into silicone! For the hair itself I actually used a mix of human hair (the kind used for extensions) and faux fur snipped from the backing. Hope that answers your question!
Me too! DIY is so satisfying. Silicone is great in that it closes around the hairs once they are in, so need need for any adhesive. They will come out again if you scrub at them but with stand a fair amount of touching! This guy was in a gallery for a while and members of the public would always stroke him, the hairpunching held up great. It was just the airbrushing that came off a little. I wouldn't try and use any wet silicone, I imagine it would just make a horrible sticky mess. :)
