“Skylar!” Romano panted as she followed the running skarmory as she through the hallways. “Slow down! Just what...are you...thinking of?” Suddenly, Skylar came to a complete halt. Romano, unable to slow herself, crashed into her back and they both went sprawling.
“You know,” Skylar groaned. “I think you're more graceful in the air.”
A shrug was the only response from the gligar. “Works for me,” She replied as she picked herself up, unable to deny the opportunity of giving Skylar's backside a good once going over. “Nice...”
“What was that?” Skylar as she got up.
“Nothing.” The bat girl grinned. “So what's this 'plan' of yours? Somehow I doubt its something as simple as 'tell the truth and hope for the best.' ”
Skylar looked at Romano in askance. “Are you crazy? Nevermind, stupid question.” She shook her head. “Look, I told my dad that Dominic was actually a growlithe, right?”
“Riiight.” Romano nodded.
“So all I need is a growlithe to stand in for Dom and I'm all set! I can pretend to be leader with Dominic gone...and in truth I kinda know more about how to be a leader than he does anyway.” She said as she headed into the girls locker room, Romano following right behind.
Romano crossed her arms. “Fine but where are you going to get a growl...lithe.” Her eyes widened as she figured it out. “You are NOT thinking of—”
“HIIII!” Mitzi said gleefully as she flung the doors open. She blinked. “Wow. This place really echoes. Echoes. Echoes...” Romano blinked at the growlithe girl as she provided her own echoes to augment the ones already present, and then turned to Skylar.
“...I don't know which one of you is crazier right now.”
“Teapot. Kettle. Black.” Skylar rejoined. “Besides I don't have a lot of time and I'm desperate!”
Mitzi turned, hearing that last part. “Really? Cuz there's a bathroom right over there and...”
“Not what I meant Mitzi.” Skylar sighed, ignoring Romano's snort of amusement. She brightened. “Mitzi...how'd you like to play a game?”
“Um, sure!” Her tail wagged. “What game?”
“The 'Bailing Skylar's Cute Can-Opener Ass Outta Trouble' Game.” Romano answered. Skylar glared at her for a second, overlooking the cute remark.
“Sounds fun!” Mitzi nodded. “But, do I have to attache a can opener to my butt? Cuz I don't think it's going to work...”
Skylar plastered a large smile on her beak. “No need. Here's the rules. MY dad is coming to school soon. Whenever you see him, you're gonna pretend to be on MY team.”
“Okay....what do I win?” She asked. Skylar thought fast.
“Um...You get to play with Rene's tails for an entire afternoon?” She suggested looking at Romano. She shrugged.
Mitzi clapped. “Yipee! Okay! I'll play!”
The gligar cleared her throat. “Skylar? A word?”
“Pineapples!” Mitzi declared.
“...What?”
“Well you asked for a word, buy you never said which word you wanted so--” Romano covered her face.
“Yes, well, thanks Mitzi. Skylar?” She waited until Skylar got close and then whispered in her ear. “Dominic is a guy, how're you going to explain having a female growlithe present?”
“I'll tell my dad, if he asks, that there must've been a simple communication error. That Dominic is really...Dominique. Its fool proof!”
Romano rolled her eyes. “That's impossible, you two are involved.”
“Romano...” She sighed. “I really need your help here. I don't know who else I can turn to right now and I really don't want to get uprooted from a team where I'm comfortable to one that my dad'll stick me with—assuming he simply doesn't pull me from the PCA. I know you think this is all stupid, but...can you please help anyway?”
The bat sighed. By all rights Romano should fly home, tell her parents, and then spend the next couple of days hiding under her bed. After all, Skylar's dad was a big wheel in the Sinnoh military. When he was a Lt. Colonel, he participated in the putting down of the revolutionary Canalave commune which forced her family to flee Sinnoh when she was child, moving half a dozen times changing identities so often that much of her own life was almost like a mystery to her.
Romano thought for a moment about her last identity...Lara Gligor. What were her hobbies? Did she make any friends before she had to move again? What did she spend her time doing? She couldn't recall and wondered why that was...She shook her head and sighed. “All right, all right...I'm in.”
“Thanks Romano!” Skylar caught them both off guard by giving her a hug. “I...really appreciate this.” She sniffed. Romano was spared having to answer when Mitzi bounded over and glomped both of them in a bone-crushing hug worthy of Rene. “Mitzi!”
“What?” The canine blinked. “Everyone was hugging and I didn't want to be left out!”
