Part of a commission for
- thank you!
T. Jean- the Frog dude in beefier fish (?) form? I'm honestly not too thrilled about how this turned out- I hate sprites that have a non-black border 'cause I never can quite match the dark colors they tend to be. In this case the very dark blue outline wound up being a brighter blue than the sprite intended..shoulda just gone with black.
That being said, the picture turned out nice at least..right?
847 beads.
Original sprite was provided by the commissioner, but can most likely be found on The Spriter's Resource.

Wow, this is pretty impressive--this type of thing must take a lot of time and patience. :o
Though, it does look a little messy in the outlined areas. Whereas in the sprite there's a good deal of a dark outline, yours looks kinda blended with all that blue. Still better than I could probably do with this though--I'm too used to spriting on my computer. ^ ^;
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound as if I were bashing your effort--it's truly amazing that you take so much time to work on these.
I didn't mean any offense. Depending on how much these cost, I might want to commission you one day. ^w^

Constructive criticism is always welcome.
And you're right on that- that blue border is too bright and it sorta blends in with the rest of the sprite. I originally wanted to try all black but I stuck with blue to see what happened. The actual sprite has a much darker shade of blue that is closer to black, but I didn't have anything that matched. This was honestly the closest I could get without going for straight up black.
Like I said in the description though, I'm not actually happy with the original spritework itself- doesn't seem like a really clear image.

Yeah, it does--it doesn't look horrible per-say, but it does blend in.
I can understand the experimentation though, since I do it all the time myself in terms of my spriting.
Though black probably would have worked, it would offset the look just a little, so it's understandable--I don't know a thing about remaking sprites this way, so I'm not sure if I can help or anything, but it seems fascinating. ^w^
It might be the lack of an outline that makes it so, but just like with spriting, it takes trial and error.
It took me a few years to figure out how to make my own palettes, and get hair to look just right after all. < <;

There's honestly not a lot I can do with it at this point unless I wanted to re-make the whole sprite..and frankly I don't want to unless the commissioner hates it that much.
I don't think it looks terrible, but I try and strive for color accuracy when I can. This was just one of those odd cases where I couldn't quite get it. There are some other sprites in this series that use a really dark brown or dark red for a highlight as well- it fits with the color scheme of the sprite, but it's difficult to emulate with beads and you wind up with something too bright.
I should have just previewed the sprite with all black to see how it looked. Ah well ya live and learn!
