A little late night early morning sketch of an oc.
He is about five years old at this point. That's almost a quarter of my whole life and I still haven't thought of a name for him. He's a member of the cast from one of my book ideas set in Ensearo. A very dragon-lore-heavy fantasy world.
I do call the species of dragon Greys. I also feel like the design and the name could be up for a little revamping. Along with a few other dragon species I have from the same realm.
But A little on Greys:
Greys are sort of lanky and bony in general but can have different body shapes, wings, and number of limbs. Most have 2 bony fingers off the wing one a thumb one a finger, but more or less is possible usually giving or taking from the number of wing bones. They all have the same odd head shape:
A singular pointed crest off the back, with an ear below, an upper jaw that slopes up from the mouth to a sharp point, while the lower jaw curves down. Because of this jaw shape, sometimes, teeth and the tongue can be seen even when the jaws are closed. Almost all have large, spade-shaped, plate scales running from the back of the head almost to the tip of the tail, while the rest of the body is cloaked in fine rough scales, giving it a leathery look.
There's not much of a visual difference between male and female Greys, but the clearest comes in the ears. Most males ears slope up to a point, while most females ears slope down. Females growth continues past when males stop growing, and therefore are often the bigger, or at least longer, of the two.
The greatest visual difference comes in Alphas, which are only known to be male. They are a variant of Greys that grow faster, and are often larger and stronger than normal Greys male or female. Alphas will occasionally appear in colours other than the normal grey tones, and have more extravagant head crests that vary greatly from dragon to dragon.
If you can't tell my unnamed boy here has an extra spike off his crest, which was sort of just something I threw onto his early design to show that he was an Alpha grey, and it's another one of those things that I could really live with changing in the future. Also greys don't have feathers, that's just him.
