I'm presuming this is a 'retired' mask obtained through a surplus store or auction. CS agent is used in training, believe it or not. Done it four or five times now, myself... and yes, it sucks just as bad as you would think.
Also, given the presence of a C2 canister (activated charcoal), that would mean it will be effective protection against any particulate or aerosol agent, not gases. The canister acts like an ultra-fine, absorbent air filter, essentially, but won't protect against stuff like carbon monoxide or chlorine gas.

Ah, ok! The thing looks quite similar to the old M17s. Until I started getting curious enough to actually look 'em up, I didn't realize the different services use different masks (I'm AF, by the way. Nine years going).
So, how does it protect against gases? Looks like the same C2 canister we use.

Its all on whats inside I guess. I'm not CBRN/NBC so I don't really know, but I can ask for yeh. ^^
According to our CBRN / NBC NCOIC they work against everything except blood agents. They slip through the filter because the particles are too small.
Also, for reference, a gas is nothing more then suspended particles. They might be rearry rearry small particles, but they are still particles. Some, are bigger then others. Like water vapor is a rather large suspended particle :3

Hm... you may be right. Our guys tell us they won't work in "an oxygen deficient environment or against ammonias". Guess that would make blood agents ammonias?
Either way, they suck horribly for anything over about a half hour of wear (my record is seven hours straight... I hate ORIs), and are far from perfect. Seen the new M50 in development?

Yeah, I figured it'd make it hard to breathe. Don't wanna wear one unless you'd die otherwise, then? =P I wasn't aware the lenses were that fragile, though. It seems like the military would build 'em tougher than that, in case somebody bashed their head on a pole while they were wearing it and got their eyes exposed to bad air.
