Kept everything relatively low poly and low complexity for ease of view.

You probably wouldn't want the new versions anyway. There's some big upgrades too, especially with 3D, but frankly the 3D tools are still shit. If you like the line drawing tools any Windows version should be good enough IMO. Especially since you can import that into Illustrator... maybe make a workflow out of that or something.
I guess Its actually more a case of the different style of work I have to do that really matters. With maya, everything is a 'rough guess' as to where they go. It works fine for pretty pictures and previews, but its not got the accuracy for making working diagrams for the engineers to interprit.
Autocad can be very accurate, but its not very easy to be so accurate.
