Oooh...! Okay I get ya, in that case maybe doing the opposite, where you shift him to the off direction might aid to that?
I've only edited sprites myself, and have yet to make one from scratch so heck if I really know, but could be an idea to toy with!
The way he sets up is good, makes him seem bulky yet still quick, and the sparkle is certainly a nice touch.
