Velantian's are a race. They originated in the pulp "Lensman" space opera by E.E. "Doc" Smith. "Worsel, The Velantian" first appeared in Astounding magazine in 1937 as part of the original six part installment of "Galactic Patrol" later released in novel form in 1950 to become the third book in the Lensman series. I loved that series as a kid, still have a full set of the paperbacks.
