I've had an album that I've been working on for a while now that I've decided to post the first few pieces of for feedback. The album is a bit odd as it lands in some grey area between ambient sounds and actual structured music for parts. It's very much supposed to create imagery as you close your eyes, but it's still an experimental style for me, so I don't know how enjoyable others will find it. I'd really appreciate some comments on how you feel about it.
Also, this is by far the most abstract piece, and also the first song on the album, so keep in mind that it's supposed to set the mood for the following songs.

I rather like it. I don't know why, but I have a thing for abstract/ambient music, properly done of course.
Is that all done on keyboard, or DAW? I've got FL Studio and just recently went Maschine MK2 back in Aug., and I'm not very good. I just suck at making melodies, coming up with content.
I like this though, looking forward for more.

This was done in FL studios. I didn't even use a keyboard, because I like putting in one element at a time. Like, I'll write a line, and then add the dynamics my manually drawing in the volume multiplier.
This piece in particular I couldn't even really give tips on making.
The rhythms only vaguely resemble the meter in places and the melody lands on quite a bit of non-chord tones such 9ths and 11ths. If you want to make something like this I guess my tip would be to use delicacy, as abstract as that may be. As far as melodies go, I just try to land on the 3rds and 7ths (or 9ths sometimes) of the chords at the start of each measure and fill the notes in between that smooth out the phrase shape.
If my music theory technobabble doesn't make any sense to you, just keep at it and find what you think sounds good. :3
Then look at the stuff you like and try to figure out what it is that you like about it and recreate it in different ways. You can write whole songs around theme and variation concepts and make them interesting, and it's a really good exercise building your own personal musical vocabulary.
However you decide to go about it, I wish you the best in your songwriting. c:

Yeah, I try to. I suppose you just have to have that artistic side to you, and I like to think I do, but at times I have my doubts. I always get these ideas in my head but I'm bad at putting them into physical form. I could always do sampling/remixes, but I like to make my own stuff. Here's one I did a couple days ago that I never really completed:

I'll get something going, and then never really finish as my ADHD or something kicks in. I showed it to my mom and asked her what she thinks it needs and she said a triangle sound. Oh, ignore the pic too, that was my coworker being a dummy.
Also, I don't know if you've heard of Maschine (beat machine), but this guy here has some pretty cool songs that he's made with one. I like his style as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBAmw-XKqKg
