Rarity will finish working on the remaining dresses for her friends in a little bit in my Equestria dreamscape, but for the moment she wants to try out again an outfit she purchased in an earlier dream. link
This outfit was originally inspired by a sketch done by link on DA. This piece will go on sale at Further Confusion this January. It is done in my usually colored pencil, marker, gouache, technical pen on vellum finish Bristol Board. Image size is about 10"x 6".

Well she is curious about several of the new fashion and art trends in Equestria. Both on a professional and personal level for her. In particular she is very curious to see what effect Scratch has on the world of fashion and the arts, and this outfit would not out of place at one her concerts.
Well we have seen the ponies wear furs in the show, and there are certain items that usually are made of leather that have also appeared on the program. So my subconscious has gone with leather. Also Leather is was very prevalent in a 19th century.
Now the ponies don't like killing animals so they purchase the hides and pelts from the griffins who do the initial preparation. Once this step is done the ponies seem to not have any problems culturally dealing with the product. Very similar to how the Burakumin, sometimes called the eta, of Japan would perform tasks shunned by others in population like the tanning of hides and the burial of the dead. link However once the Burakumin had performed the preparations of the hides, and socially purifying them, it was considered acceptable for folks to handle the goods made from the hides. Are such distinctions logically and rational? No but civilizations are not entirely rational or logical institutions.

This is very true. I should have considered the possibility of such things as deer leather or similar. It actually makes perfect sense. I feel even more silly because I did significant worldbuilding which included a lot of information on griffin hunting practices.
Well, leather certainly looks good on Rarity and she seems to have grasped the modern style well.

Now there is one thing that in my headcanon that seems to be a universal. Ponies can instinctively detect hides made from other ponies. I don't know if it is due to magic or not, but woe to the griffin who gets the idea of trying to kill ponies for their hides. Apparently there were certain tribes back in Pre-Equestria unification times who did hunt ponies. With the arrival of the Royal Sisters those practices were quickly abandoned. Some ceased the practice at the request of the Princesses, others who refused to stop became "The clans that went away" when the Royal Sisters used force to resolve the issue.

That is another interest thing. I don't know what source of inspiration John Pierre used for his sketch but I've seen cavalry boots from the 19th century that had buckles/ reinforcing straps like that on them, and snug form-fitting vests were also common at that time.

I suspect that there are also ponies (or griffins or some such) that act sort of like undertakers for deceased cattle, pigs, etc. Sure, they're respected and all, but there would also be a harvesting and processing of usable materials such as hide, meat, sinew, horn, etc. Not something much talked about in polite company, but then mortuary services for deceased ponies wouldn't be, either.
Yeah, AJ's family has to deal with dead farm animals on their property. In fact that was source of trouble and distress when Short Curl was killed by the Deception. link
That can't be legal... Or at least not street legal. ^.^
Though I can't help but wonder if there will be a local backlash against Penita's shenanigans at some point. "Won't somepony think of the foals!" Though actually... Hmm. In seriousness, Scootalo idolises Rainbow Dash, doesn't she? So, might she try and copy RD's performance at the competition? Cutie Mark Crusaders Pole Dancers? O_o
Petina: Aw girls, you make me feel so proud.
Skybrush: Nonononononononno!
