They can be pretty interesting. Bugs in general can, though I often find the heads/faces a challenge to make appealing while still "buggy"

That is certainly true as the shape and proportion of most features is different than most types of anthros. That was one of the difficulties artists have had with a bee hybrid form I have.

Aye. On my own, I'll usually go a more toonish route, create humanlike faces to allow more expression

That can certainly work even if the end result is a bit different from something more realistic. But toonish can be simpler and more appealing also at times.
