That is a common ailment of the contemporary composer. It is unfortunate. However, that is why in this day and age it is best to be eclectic with one's compositions. It naturally provides a broader medium for which your less popular, but more significant, pieces can be heard. There is always that one piece that will either burden the composer or unearth disgust (more-so directed at the masses, not the pieces) in the avid/elitist listeners due to its popularity. Such examples are: Fur Elise (Beethoven), Prelude in C-Sharp Minor (Rachmaninoff), Clair De Lune (Debussy), Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart), and many more. Albeit, the above pieces are all quite good. However, they served as great marketing pieces; getting their names out or establishing a common knowledge of sorts.
One such style of music I suggest looking into is woodwind trios, quartets, and quintets. There are quite a lot of woodwind groups out there, but there is a great lack of idiomatic, small-woodwind-ensemble literature. Composing a decent woodwind ensemble piece (and then attempting to get it out there) will allow it to spread like wildfire throughout that specific culture of music. It is a branch, a connection, an opportunity to get one's name other pieces out into the open.
