Clue by Four Time
Okay folks, let's ge something straight. Just because you see someone's IM address here on FA doesn't mean you should start paging them out of the blue. Don't expect when you do that they should automatically know everything about your life or that they can drop whatever it is that they are doing to dedicate their online time to talking to you exclusively.
Artists are often busy and may have the IM client running so they can chat with friends, customers, or other purposes. If you want to talk to them, send them EMAIL first and ask if you can talk to them in IM.
Why do I say this? Because every time someone pages me in an IM window, it takes the focus away from whatever I was doing in a window and it means I'm suddenly typing in some window I had no idea was even there. If I know who you are, that's one thing. If you're somebody I don't know, expect the window to be closed, comments unread. Keep at it and I'll ban you. I don't like to be drastic, but last night I had seven, SEVEN IM windows going and I only knew one of those people. I didn't know the rest and frankly, I don't want to. Not if you're going to start paging artists at random and tell them how you love their art, please draw me for free, my hamster has pimples on its butt and oh by the way, I have no life.
It's annoying as hell.
If you page me and I don't know you, expect to get short answers. "Okay." "That's nice." "Do I know you?" That sort of thing. If I know you, tell me who you are on FA and I might recognize you. If not, you had best try email / FA mail instead if you don't want to have your window automatically tossed into the bitbucket, messages unread.
That brings up another thing- I'm not here for your entertainment. If you want to be entertained, read a book. I often idle during my online time because... surprise, surprise, I'M DRAWING. Don't get upset or in my face that I'm ingoring you- I may be actually doing something important like drawing so folks can enjoy that.
Sorry for the rant, but some people need to be aware that their innocent behavior can be exceedingly annoying to the extreme.
And now back to drawing more silly stuff. :)

Makes me wonder what messenger you are using, which allows random IMs. (since most require one to accept some kind of notice to begin. With the exclusion of perhaps AOL)
Either way, many do it trying to be harmless. Though I guess if one starts having 150+ buddies, then even inane chatter can become deafening.

Then might I suggest MSN or Yahoo? (both free) With the slightly more exclusive communications, the responsibility falls to you. In a way, it always does.
This way you can pick and choose those who can send you instant messages. Much less messy and random annoyances. (If that is what you are talking about. From what I have read of this particular artist, I do not think he is the kind of person to befriend someone for five seconds then treat it as a one way street)
Then again, remember: All these programs have an off switch. If you are in the mood to do work, flicking that switch might be more advised then freaking out on innocent (if annoying) random instant messengers. Lets face it. Good artists in a subculture like this, like good actors, often develop fans. 1 in 10 fans tend to develop into obsessive loonies. (I base this on absolutely nothing) It is the life for those in any kind of spot light. The trick is in not letting it get to your head, and blowing off the mundane and nutty alike.
Artists owe nothing to their fans, but friends owe something to their friends.

In my experience, Yahoo is no better then AIM. In fact it's the only messenger service where Ive gotten what can effectively be called IM spam. Where just random sounding user names all IM me the same message out of the blue. Infact due to Yahoo's offline IM feature the situation is made even worse. I hardly log into the service anymore due to now getting over a dozen new IM windows, usually all spam when I log in.
MSN isn't bad though, but again it all depends on the client software you're using, a number of official and unofficial IM clients have filtering options, and it sounds like Flinters does indeed have some of those options available since he mentions being able to ignore/ban users from contacting him.
I completely agree with the rest you said though. Just turning IM off when concentration is needed should all ways be an option. And artists should indeed owe nothing to their fans.

I'm the same; always online, but my communications with people I know take a while because I DON'T stop working to chat. Some people keep sending "You there?" messages because I don't respond immediately; it certainly can get annoying.
If your IM client of choice forces the window to the front try Trillian; it combines several IM clients and it's never taken over my pc while I'm working (pops up in the background.)

I agree with you, though fortunately I don't seem to have that bad a problem with it. And when I set my away message people -usually- get the message that I don't wanna be bothered at the moment.
Friends and aquaintances are OK though to IM me any timesince, well, to put it bluntly, when friends IM me when I have my away message set it's usually something important they need to tell me, and important stuff is fine.
My bigger problem is timing. I'm be thinking of going to bed or getting ready to go do something and a few seconds before I'm about to sign off or set an away message, -that's- when I'll get involved in a long conversation and I'll keep wishing I had signed off 5 seconds earlier cause what I really want to do it just fall asleep. XD

I used to have a friends that if i didn't respond with, oh, 5 seconds of him hitting 'enter' he would bombard me with "Are you there? Where'd you go?' messages >.<
Also: People who instantly assume you RP, and RP sex. With anyone. And message all the timie...
Thats why i wait on 'appear offline' until I see someone come on that I actually want to talk to... because I'm to damned polite to block people >.<
Ah well...

Hahaha XD That rocks
But yes, I completely understand what you say! *cheers* Im tired of random people dropping me an IM and telling me their life stories... >:\ people I know, talk to, and care about thats fine... but yeah I TOTALLY understand. I like that Yahoo has the neat little feature of "Appear permanently offline to ___" but you can still be online to your good pals you know, and your not EXACTLY blocking them (I hate blocking people >_>). I wish all the IMs had that.

I had the same problem 3 years ago and I can understand his problem. He had that much fans like you explained, that he couldn't handle them easily. Of course he had such a unique style to love, like I loves his and I don't even wonder why his fan camp bigger than mine, I respects, and that was the thing I wasn't even wonder why wasn't he available that much. First thought was that he had to reply to the fans of course. Second was something other I don't remember right now.
It is not so easy when you got sick of this annoying problem and you need to understand it, of course not, since I'm an agressive type (to say the truth) I still aware of to handle the fans nicely, however I can't promise them everything, but to say nice things.
It's a hard thing to solve, I know.
Big power takes big responsibility.
To tell them the truth was a good point to confess, but if artists would write something little detail about how much and what do they works, may enlighten the inpatient fans what is going on. The truth sets you free.

actually, if I'm away from the computer it really the truth, I always let them know what's my status since I made a mistake and left the keyboard behind without changed my status to afk and a 3 lined drama welcomes me back when I was just on the WC. Filtering... I'm not sure about that thing, I usually on AIM and MSN, but ISQ and Yahoo is not my world. Sorry if I didn't answered your question.
8 conversations? I don't even have that many, and if I do, most of them go ignored.
I never expect a prompt response from you, I figure you're muckin' or drawing or perhaps both. Usually I'm on Furc and drawing and reading a book and staring off into space at the television and about 900 other things, so its not really a big deal.
*offers hugs and runs off*

i under stand alot of what you say god knows haveing a fan base is hard and a lil forwarning is nice and i know i hate it when i see people beg for art god to many furs will sell there body for art. so i understand thats really why i dont talk to artests simply cuz well i dont want to bother you. in my experence most artests are nasaty if your not a prier friend and will most likely never talk to you and plz relize i am not saying all artestes are asses but some are. i mean you people who draw get so much fame from the fur fandom but us musicians barly get a fan base. so i count it lucky some you get IMs from fans but asking for Emails or FA note is a good idea so noone gets upset for someone trying to make a friend with an artest.
Your posting is one of the best here. Thanks.
Want to make friends with an artist? Especially at a convention? Here's a tip- We're BORED. Yes, we're busy drawing and all, but we also have lots of people who walk up, leaf through things and seem like they want to say something but then lose their nerve and wander off for fear of disturbing the artist.
Disturb us. Tell us you like our art, but perhaps why you like the art. Point to a picture and say you like this or that about it in particular. Strike up a conversation about something else non-art related. Find out what that artist's other interest are. Are they into cars? Computers? Cheeseburgers? Hey, anything is fair game.
Want to get a really good sketch? Don't give them a book and tell them 'draw anything, I don't have a theme'. Hit them up with something that will get their interest. Something like... "Worst/first job you ever had," or "The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time," or .... "Why Lowes Hardware shouldn't sell sex toys."
I mean, if I saw a book with one of those themes, I'd be paying YOU to let me draw in it. It would quickly go to the top of the sketchbook pile to draw something evil and clever in there. And you'll have a good opening for other discussions.
Ask about art supplies. Do you have a favorite paper type? What is the difference between pencils? Scanning tips? Lawn mower repair? Anything at all can help bridge that awkward first moment.
In short, go for it. You gain nothing without trying. I won't bite. Honest.
Unless you have a cheesburger. :)

I don't really have issues with the IM, since we usually use it for internal communications. But i remember i had this person, who IMed me every time i got online. So it was, logging on, closing MSN Today, and closing his window. If i don't reply, starts "you busy?", if i say yes, gets offended. If i say no, starts "so what you wanna do?".
I don't know, i don't like mistreating people, so i never told this person that it's bothersome...dunno what I should do...

I had the same problems too about 3 years ago and I can understand it.
Someone who really admires an idol and you just can't help it to get rid of them if they're just adoring because you pushed something kickass to be famous. There are kind and nice fans to talk to and the annoying and boring ones that mostly we don't like.
It is wise to keep a "Busy" sign on any kind of IM client when we would like to toss back the "unwelcomed guests"
Sometimes I really busy with my own, but I keep logged in because I have that account for talk to the ones I loved and I don't dare to erase the ones I'd like to because they'd spread bad reputation over us. Yes, it's a situation when they keeps us in Check.
