With the breaking of the first seal, I beheld a fiery apparation come forth from the darkness. Clad in crimson armor, blood dripping from his hands and crimson tears streaming from the eyes of his mask. I was struck by such a feeling of sadness and despair, War had come, to conquer and enslave, and he was but the first of four beasts.
Krieg Von Gottensnamen, Death Knight, Paladin of Tyranny, Ordained Champion, Pious Templar of Hextor. One of the four horsemen villains I created for a D&D game that never happened. He's the "tank" of the villain party, as well as a passive de-buffer.

Well its nice to have a scaled progression in case the heroes ran into them early in the story line, like before Krieg became a Deathknight. Though the main challenge from the four of them is that they can't be killed, the heroes would have to figure out a way to stop them without destroying their bodies. I have their background stories in my head, so I can stick them into just about any campaign setting.
Well yeah its always nice to have a scaled progression for any monster. Not only could you manage to change the enemy depending on when they meet them in the story you could also scale them back mid fight if its going way to bad for the party.
So a way to fight them without killing them? I can think of several things you could do spell-wise from 3.5. I wonder if there is another way outside of spells you had in mind. Like couldn't you manage to send them to another plane? Or maybe soul trap them?

Well soul trap won't work against War, Famine or Death since soul trap is a necromancy spell allowing a fort save and undead are immune to any spell that allows a fort save that can't also be used against an object. Good luck at actually tagging Pestilence with it, he won't let himself get caught in a stand up fight. Plus spell resistance is pretty high for those three as well, but burying/sealing them up within antimagic zone was what the "prophecies" were leading up to. Not much a bunch of primary casters can do when sealed in an antimagic zone. Sending them to another plane would work, as long as it was one that Famine couldn't gate out of.
That is why I always try and get a silent and still teleport if I think I can manage it in my spell list for the day. I want to have that out if possible. However I was wondering if you were pointing to something like that. We get the privilege of burying the fuckers alive. Three of them being undead means they also get the prize of spending the rest of time to think about what they've done. Eternal time out is their gift from the PCs!
I do enjoy fights that are less straight up combat and more thought puzzle and out maneuvering the enemies. The only thing sometimes though is just my bad luck with dice rolls. Sounds like you'd have come up with an interesting enough and difficult fight.

Well not only do the undead get the eternal time out, Pestilence isnt undead but he has an alternate form that he can stay in indefinitely without aging, so he'd be trapped the same as the others. But yeah, I love putting together a more thinking mans campaign, unfortunately most of the players I've had end up being munchkins of one type or another.
I can enjoy a good munchkin character but I prefer to build an RP character, idea, and background. Then build the D&D stats around that ideal.
Am I suppose to feel like an evil bastard for saving the world from these four guys by burying them alive? If you were pestilence why would you want to stay in an unending form when buried alive like that?

Yeah, eventually, like possibly hundreds or even thousands of years later. In Hellboy the movie, their is a scene where this statue of a saint was found inside a museum, inside the statue was a glass jar filled with the crystallized tears of angels that were holding the essence of a major demon trapped. The villains broke the statue and revived the demon, real ugly demon, every time it got killed it's soul would split in half and form doubles of itself. The hound of resurrection was one of its names.
True, the book Liber Mortis, also known as the book of bad latin, talks about the mental instability of undead who have been around over a century. Especially liches. Though one wonders about just how stable a person is who A. tortures and mutilates people both living and undead for fun, B. wants to cover the entire world in an arid wasteland of dust and sand, C. rule the world with an iron fist in the name of his invisible friend :).
Course I have my own view on sanity anyway, if your sentient, you are aware of your own thoughts, and that makes you insane. We are all a little mad here.

*smiles* S'good to see you two playing nice...
I'm glad you showed me the original concept work you did on this one, darling. I think you went with an interesting design, kind of reminding me of the Japanese demon-warriors with the multiple faces on their armor. Of course, the nerd in me sees the symbol on the cuirass and knee-jerks to "Oo! Chaos Marine!" But... nerd... sorry. *sticks out her tongue, smiling*

*chuckles* Yeah, the holy symbol for Hextor is a clenched fist holding six pointed arrows, but I couldnt get the fist to look right so I just used the chaos symbol. The armor references I used were from multiple anime/video games including the demon samurai from Darkstalkers. *chuckles* Good eye for spotting that hon.
