Know that there's the classic series (26 seasons, 1963-1989) and the new series (7 Seasons, 2005-present).
I advise you watch the entire new series first (With Christopher Eccleston) and get ready for the 50th anniversary special (November 23rd).
If you have some time and effort left, watch the classic series.
You won't regret a single moment, i can assure you

I never understood how Tom Baker managed to walk/run without stumbling over his scarf...

I think he did trip over his scarf a few times during the show, actually

The length of the scarf was actually a design flaw -- they gave the props lady a whole bunch of yarn and just told her to make a scarf. They didn't specify a length, so she just used ALL of it!
