The sky is blue because the blue colour in the sunlight spectrum at it's most common angle reflects off nitrogen particles in the atmosphere, creating the blue effect. At other angles, other colours reflect- most commonly red, organge and yellow, aka, at sunset. And space is black as there is nothing for light to reflect off.
