Previous • NextSo the raingutter on the outside patio was plugged with rocks and clay, filled with water, and the critters Zebrouxs Parallellogram and Kevin had caught at Malibu Creek lived there now.
Unlike the fish who accepted their new surroundings, the crayfish were quite paranoid at being removed from their old home, and were comforted only by hiding next to the rocks we had placed in the rain gutter.
One afternoon, Zebrouxs and Kevin had gone out. When they returned, Kevin noticed that there was now a substantial river flowing down the driveway. The largest crayfish was sitting quietly in a water-filled depression in the driveway underneath where the rain gutter would normally have emptied out. One of his claws was broken off.
Apparently, none of the rocks in the rain gutter were big enough for him to feel safe hiding next to, so he started excavating the clay that plugged up the rain gutter in order to be able to get next to one of the large rocks that plugged up the hole.
He had dug through enough so that half the water in the rain gutter along with himself were ejected onto the driveway below.
All of the other creatures in the rain gutter managed to stay in the water that was still left over. They were moved into one of the tanks inside after this, and the rain gutter habitat experiment ended.
The big crayfish died soon after his fateful plunge.
