Finished tail commission for a friend of
NCDarkness , unless of course any changes are requested!
This tail is about 20 inches, medium wide, and features turquoise/robin's egg blue and silver guard hairs. It also has a posing rig.
I feel like this tail was meant for raving!

Gooorgeous. The colors are amazing, and I think the guard hairs work especially well when they're really blended around like this instead of localized. They just create such an interesting texture. Just plain awesome!
The guard hairs look so sleek, too. Do they at all prevent the sort of clumping/sticking that yarn tails are prone to? The regular yarn fibers are so thin I find they stick together a lot, hence the need for more brushing than faux fur.

Thank you : 3 I definitely agree with you, I think they look coolest when they are all over! I think it's much more like a real animal that way then, too. And yes. The guard hairs definitely make a huge difference. I'm not 100% sure if it's the guard hairs or how they are attached, but either way they make it so that the tail mostly just needs to be brushed before and after every wear and stays looking pretty unrustled in between (unless you were to sit on it or smush it weird or something).
I used to care about that more, but since I don't like stopping to brush while wearing I've gotten used to a certain amount of scruff. I also find that simply grabbing by the ring and doing a quick, rough 'shake-out' helps a lot if you find you have gotten some more hardcore matting from brushing up on stuff/having been sitting and don't want to actually use a slicker brush. Though I'm sure you already know that little trick.
Yeah, the shake out! I do that a lot because I also like my tails to stay thick and fluffy and not get smoothed and flattened out.
It also seems to depend a lot on the fur how much they clump. The old Hobby Lobby stuff is SUPER silky, but very clumpy. I probably won't be using it anymore both because of that and because of Hobby Lobby's recent legal silliness.
But the Vanna's Choice is a little less clumpy. Less silky as well, and with an almost sparkly shine to it, but I like that it doesn't stick together as much. Shaking it out fluffs it more easily.

Yeah, I dig Vanna's. The only ILTY I use is leftovers from over a year ago--I stopped shopping at Hobby Lobby because I don't agree with their policies. But it's even color differences within a brand--sometimes a beige will be more prone to matting than a purple, and so on. There's a lot of variability. Experimentation is definitely key with this craft, always trying to find a better brand or a better color within a brand. But Vanna's is a good one that I've used pretty much all along and still do, it's coarser like you said but behaves a bit better and looks nice.
