Quite a story indeed. In case people are curious: when in the song they talk about rationing, of curfews, of museums being raided, people hiding in cellars and canons blaring in the distance, they are NOT speaking hypothetically...

They certainly aren't.

But.. those who understand the lyrics, understand French. Which means they probably have an understanding of not only the language, but the country it comes from. Very likely, they have some idea what the lyrics mean.

I assume everyone looks up the lyrics when they encounter a song in a language they don't know, or is that just me?

If the lyrics are printed out, most people certainly will try to either figure them out or look them up. But if they are simply hearing a song, and don't know the lyrics, they may simply listen to the tune - unaware of its significance.
