A piece in several sections for Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Piano and Percussion, performed in February.
This piece begins with the ambient noises of night, scattered effects evoking a character in a place of cricket chirps and rustling leaves. About a minute in, someone is heard distantly playing a flute. The flute gets louder as the character searches for this mysterious sign of other life, and eventually the other instruments drop out altogether as the flute plays alone, almost hypnotically. Suddenly it dashes away fleetingly, the character is overcome by sudden confusion, and embarks on a search for this elusive idea that just escaped. Toward the end of the piece this search ends with a bit of disappointment. Soon the flickers of fireflies begin sounding, and the piece ends consolingly as the character dances in the plays of light and then fades into the dark alone.
