There's just something about those deep black feathers and yellow eyes :)
Perhaps bit surprisingly they're a part of the icterid family rather than corvids like crows and ravens, the latter of which are among my favorite birds.

When it comes to grackles, they're no "bird brains" either http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFGdMbuToQY (Someone really needs to revise that saying.)
