Don't know if you're supposed to see through the fur onto the mesh itself. perhaps you could make the fur 'not cast or recieve shadow' and texture the mesh underneath the a slightly darker colour than the fur to fill in the gaps.

I would prefer that it didn't show thru and I'll keep the shadow on /off thing in mind. However there is a problem with near and far field rendering I have not been able to solve in a cost effective manner. Have not been able to find much reference for it either. Anyway the fur count has been tweaked to run a 30fps animation. Setting up for stills I should use a different approach.
