Chapter 12
Ness, Lucas, Pikachu and Toon Link turned to see the speedy blue hedgehog, Sonic, standing behind them.
“Oh,” said Ness. “Hey Sonic.”
“What’s up?” asked Sonic coolly. The others shrugged in a discouraged manner. “So what’s this I hear about Subspace?”
“Some of the others who went into Subspace the other day are in trouble and we don’t have any means of getting there,” Lucas said sadly with his head down.
“That doesn’t sound good,” Sonic said with a concerned frown. “But if you need help getting there, I think I may have an answer to your dilemma.” Lucas looked up hopefully to him. “Follow me.” He turned to head off. They looked at each other; without any other options, they followed him quietly without hesitation.
“So what’s the solution you have?” Ness finally asked after a few minutes of walking, breaking the quiet that had only been disturbed by their muted footfalls on the carpeting.
“I figured I could help get you there the same way I did,” Sonic stated simply.
“Huh?” Lucas said, puzzled. “You didn’t get there by the same means as the rest of us?”
“How did you get in?” Toon Link asked before Sonic could.
“We flew in through one of the rifts caused by the subspace bomb factory,” Lucas answered. Pikachu nodded in agreement from Ness’s head.
“That’s interesting,” Sonic pondered. “A different means than by that which I got in.”
“But how did you get in there?” Lucas asked again.
“I just got a bit of help from a friend,” Sonic said with a smile.
“We’re not friends,” a voice from around the corner said. They stopped and saw Shadow the hedgehog come around the corner, arms crossed and frowning with his usual frown. “And don’t you forget that.” He looked around at the young smashers, then back at Sonic. “Taking them on a field trip or something?”
“Hey, don’t talk down to us,” Ness said sourly, stepping forward. Shadow paused before snorting slightly with amusement, his frown lessening only in the slightest.
“You’ve got spunk, kid, I’ll give you that much,” Shadow responded before facing Sonic again. “Then where are you all going? Like I should even care…” Shadow closed his eyes in thought.
“Actually, we were looking for you,” Sonic said, causing Shadow to open his eyes again, a small amount of surprise in them.
“And what is it that you’d need to bother me with?” Shadow said with some annoyance after regaining his composure.
“We need your help with getting into Subspace,” Sonic said, scratching his quills nervously.
“Again?” Shadow snorted with calm exasperation, his frown deepening somewhat. “And why do you need to go there?”
“Some of the other smashers are there and they’re in need of help,” Ness explained, still not sure of how Shadow got Sonic there at all.
“So how did you get Sonic there before?” Toon Link asked Shadow with wondrous curiosity. Shadow was quiet a moment before answering.
“By the only means I could have,” Shadow said offhandedly. “By the power of Chaos Control.”
“Oooo,” the three kids said in awe, their eyes open wide.
“So do you think you can do it again?” Sonic asked Shadow. Shadow was hesitant.
“…Fine,” Shadow said, sighing. “If it’ll get you off my back. I’ll just need a chaos emerald.” Shadow held out a hand, looking down to the side. Sonic was quiet, Shadow then looked at him. “Well?”
“You don’t have one with you?” Sonic asked, perplexed.
“You’re the one always having them with you for your final smash,” Shadow pointed out. “Moron.”
“Oh, right,” Sonic chuckled nervously. “I’ll be right back.” The next thing they knew, Sonic was dashing off towards his room. After about a minute of awkward silence, Sonic came dashing back down the hall towards them. “Okay, here you go.” He handed a light blue gem over to Shadow. Shadow took it, rolling his eyes.
“Are you all ready to go?” Shadow asked them. They all looked at each other before nodding to him. “Now where is the destination within Subspace?” Ness projected an image into his mind. “Very well then.” He closed his eyes in concentration, the gem started glowing. “Chaos Control!” A white flash enveloped the whole group.
……………
Link was sitting at Zelda’s side, keeping a constant watch over her and holding her gloved hand in his. The usual strength in his eyes had been replaced with endearing concern as he knew there was so little he could do to help her. Lucario and Roy were also sitting nearby, there for emotional support. Ike was contemplating for a new course of action while Snake was deep in thought not too far from him.
“So what do we do now?” Roy asked the two of them, lost.
“I’m not sure,” Snake answered with a deep sigh. “We’ll either have to move on while carrying Zelda with us, or we’ll have to wait here for Zelda to recover. Either way, we’re without the upper hand. And we still need to help Mewtwo recover his book. Ugh, what a migraine this has turned out to be.”
“Tabuu…” Ike growled to himself. “He’s reached a new low with this act. I swear I won’t rest until Zelda’s suffering has been avenged, along with Mewtwo’s for that matter.
Just then, a white flash lit up behind them. Those who were able to drew their weapons, ready to face any new enemies. As the harsh light dissipated, they saw what appeared to be five short figures standing on the spot.
“Yah!” Roy yelled out, charging the band of figures, still unable to see them clearly. “This is for Zelda.”
“Roy, wait, stop,” Ike called out to Roy. Roy stopped, looking back to Ike. “They’re not primids.”
“Huh?” Roy said, puzzled. He then turned back to the newly arrived group and was now able to see them clearly. It was Sonic, Lucas, Ness, Toon Link, Pikachu, and Shadow. “What are you guys doing here?”
“I’d like to ask the same of you,” Shadow countered, not even looking at Roy. “What possessed the lot of you to come to this light-forsaken place?”
“If you must know,” Lucario said dryly. “We came here to assist in the recovering of a powerful book that was taken by Tabuu.”
“Seems like you’re doing a great job of it,” Shadow said with sarcasm as he surveyed the group.
“Hold on a minute,” Snake interrupted after casting a dark glance at Sonic. “How did you even get here?”
“Simple,” Shadow stated as he juggled the chaos emerald in one hand. “With the power of a chaos emerald.”
“Are you able to get out of here as well?” Ike asked, seeing some hope for an answer to their problem.
“Yes,” Shadow answered slowly while looking at Ike with his usual frown. “Are you wanting to get out or something?”
“No, it’s not that,” Ike replied with a shake of his head. He then motioned towards where Zelda was. “She’s been hurt badly and needs to see a doctor.”
“Zelda,” Lucas, Ness and Toon Link all cried out simultaneously and rushed over to where Zelda was. Link stopped them from getting too close with a raised hand before looking back down to Zelda.
“Pika-pi,” Pikachu said sadly from Ness’s head.
“Ugh,” Shadow said. “As much as I despise being used for transportation like this, it seems I can’t refuse help like this. Very well, I’ll take her to a doctor. But I’m not carrying her.” As in answer, Link picked up Zelda very carefully and walked over to Shadow.
“Hold on there, Link,” Sonic said after getting another glare from Snake. “Allow me to carry her.” After a moment’s hesitation, Link relinquished Zelda to Sonic, who took her gently. “Don’t worry about Zelda,” he addressed the others, “we’ll make sure she’s taken care of.” With that, Shadow started focusing energy again as the chaos emerald began glowing.
“Chaos control!” Shadow said, calling on its power. An instant later, a white flash lit up again, and the two hedgehogs and princess were gone.
“Well, that leaves one problem taken care of,” Ike said with relief. “Now we can focus on what we came here to do.” He then turned to Lucario. “Where to next, Lucario?” Lucario closed his eyes and his sensory appendages on his head lifted as he attempted to track where Mewtwo’s aura was now. Through the fog of aura from everyone else, he was able to sense traces of Mewtwo’s aura.
“That way,” he said, pointing as he opened his eyes towards the direction of Tabuu’s castle.
………………
A few hours later within the walls of Tabuu’s castle, Mewtwo stood where he had been left previously, resting as much as what was possible for him. But whenever he felt himself start to doze off, sudden random thoughts would distract him from it.
“Is my conscience trying to tell me something?” Mewtwo thought to himself. “I knew I shouldn’t have brought them along, it was exactly what I wanted to prevent. Then why did I bring them along? Was it their persistence? Their willingness? Or was it something of me? I’m so sorry Zelda; I couldn’t protect you from myself. But how did Tabuu gain control over my body in the first place, and manage to turn it against my nature?”
“I never turned you from your nature,” a cold voice said from one of the doorways. Mewtwo looked up to see Tabuu entering the room. “Your nature is the same as it always has been, bitter. Did you think that the kindness those weaklings showed you truly calmed your savage heart? Even you know you could never overcome the cruelty that has haunted your past.” Mewtwo was silent. “So was it my power that turned you on her, or was it your own?”
“You know it was your power over me that caused…” Mewtwo broke off before he could finish his sentence. “They’re my friends, and I would never do anything to harm them.”
“Your friends?” Tabuu scoffed with malice. “You truly think they’re your friends?” The laugh that followed sent chills down Mewtwo’s neck. “Did any of them even notice your disappearance after Lucario’s arrival? Did any of them try to find you and wish you a farewell? Or are you just deluding yourself that you could have real friends?”
“That’s in the past,” Mewtwo snapped, glaring at Tabuu.
“Yet, so are many other things,” Tabuu countered calmly as he sat once again at the throne. “And is it not the past that’s always haunting the lives of so many. Yes, memories of angst, hurt, hate, pain; those memories that come back to haunt us, so many of which you try with futile effort to bury within your mind. But you cannot escape your memory, nor your past, or even your nature. That is what has made you so easily lose control of yourself.” Mewtwo couldn’t think of anything to say, even he knew Tabuu’s words had truth to them. “Your memories have always tormented you, even those you don’t remember…” Mewtwo’s thoughts returned to the strange girl he had seen in that vision earlier.
“How can I have a memory of something I can’t remember?” Mewtwo snorted, looking away.
“Oh, there’s ways for that to happen,” Tabuu said icily. “Anything like amnesia from time or even traumatic events. But not like you’d remember anything in your life like that. Nevertheless, you’re a slave to your own memories, remembered or not. The existence of your Book of Memories is a physical testament to that fact. And soon, we’ll see the full extent of its power.”
