I was tired of books where the griffins lived in caves like animals, or as 'noble companions' to the human characters, so this story takes place in a technological society roughly equivalent to our 1960's, but with some important differences. The ringtailed animals live in a symbiotic relationship with the griffins, handling most of the tech and day-to-day chores, while the griffins protect them from the more dangerous creatures in the world. Bottom left-- of course it wouldn't be a story by me without some violence! The parrot on the right is the main bad guy.

Sort-of. I figured the Greenie Railrunners were Maglev-type trains. Extremely fast but extremely vulnerable to debris and other track damage - the bubble in the power car is an observation deck for a Greenie trackspotter, so they can reverse the current and slow the train down in time if there's a blockage. Unlike Maglevs, though, the cars are mix-and-match depending on the need, and mixed passenger and freight is common.
The griffins actually do have a defense against firearms-- a type of repulsion field they can wear. I don't have in in any of these pictures because I'm lazy and I didn't want to draw it. It's kind of a complex peice of equipment, and would've just cluttered up the images. But it's used extensively in the book.
Most everyone DOES fly - the Greenies (including Flock Leader Whitehead, shown) are parrots and they can fly just as well as the griffins. They're also quite fond of armed Zerg Rush attacks, against which your average griffin has no defense. Then came the shieldsuits.
The shieldsuits are what lost the Greenies the war for the main character's homeland. They're still there, but in an uneasy truce - there's other lands where the war between the expansionist Greenies and everyone else is quite hot.
