Small strokes, make it sorta fur-like, it's ok to start with a fade like you have too, layer it up.
Don't make the brush fully hard either, something like 70-80% hardness is good. Don't have to draw each individual hair, just some little indicating spots along the edges of fur color changes/skin->fur spots.

That works too, can also try to add patches of fur near the spreading spots, sorta like this one: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11100917/ on the back.

Another way is to put a dark line around the fur "edge" - like this one: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11186930/ - makes the fur feel like it has a bit of thickness to it.
