Yumi was a persocom that Ueda fell in love with.
He bought her, and fell even more in love.
They got married.
But Yumi was an old model, so she began to break.
He took her to get checked, and she had a broken hard drive.
If they were to replace it, she might have lost all her memory.
So he decided not to, it would be like loosing her.
So they lived together and she just kept getting worse and worse.
She began to reboot constantly (Her opening phrase was "Nice to meet you, and what would your name be?"
One day, they were walking in the rain, and Ueda was in a daze.
He walked in the way of a truck, but Yumi managed somehow to operate and push him out of the way, sacrificing herself.
He went to her, but... she was destroyed, all she could manage was to smile and say those words in a broken voice just a few more times before she was no more.
He could have her replaced, but... that wasn't Yumi. She could never be replaced for him.
Doing the coin operated boy thing made me think of this.

I can honestly say my computer has some kind of self.
It tends to get used to me, and when I need something it'll react even if I don't.
Last time I checked, my laptop doesn't have learning software, so it shouldn't do that
kind of stuff, but it does. I have yet to have a full system crash, and she even shuts
down on her own when she overheats.

One thing I will admit is, my computer's software is not up to date, but its design is better than most of the new models i've seen.
Its really hard to break, and its parts are placed in really good areas.
(My computer's power port broke after about the 50th time I dropped it right on the plug. The plug has been severely bent for the last 4 months b4 it gave out.)
