I can't say this story is based on any first hand experience. I've seen caves, and I've seen boiling mud pots, but as far as I know you don't find one in the other. And *yet* many caves are the remains of hot sprints that have drained from the dissovled cavern millenia ago, so perhaps this isn't as far fetched a scenario as it seems.
